Background The National Art School is an institution of great importance to art education in Australia. It is the oldest art school in the country with a rich tradition of artistic practice and a highly significant alumni. In 1994 supporters of the National Art School formed the Friends of the National Art School, to promote the welfare of the school in its then struggle for independence and to offer members a link to the school through regular news and events. When the school achieved its independence in 1997 Friends of NAS undertook a broader charter as a charitable entity for the advancement of art education and projects beneficial to the school community. Friends of NAS is now the main membership organization of the NAS, serving friends and supporters of the school. It especially welcomes Alumni who wish to remain a part of the school community. BENEFITS All Friends Members will have access to regular life drawing sessions during term-time and be sent invitations to exhibitions, events and guest lectures; receive discounts on short courses; enjoy discounted art materials at selected art suppliers; the opportunity to show their artwork at Friends of NAS organised exhibitions. For a small additional fee, the NAS Library allows Friends Members to borrow books and use Library facilities.
